This can only go one way

The first one way street opened today in Manhattan in 1791.

Why the first one way street?
To control buggy traffic in the busy Theatre District.
And today, that city has the most one way routes out of all the major US areas.
Over 300 miles of one way streets in Manhattan alone.
I recently saw a theatre production based on the dictionary.
It was…a play on words.

An idea of what the first one way street may have looked like in NYC in 1791. A busy street filled with horse and buggy, fine dressed people and gas street lamps.
